Chicago Fire goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina on the radar of Premier League clubs
The American goalkeeper has been linked with a move to Wolverhampton or Southampton in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Gabriel Slonina could follow in the steps of USMNT goalkeeper Zack Steffen, who left the Columbus Crew to join Manchester City in 2019, with several Premier League clubs showing real interest in him.
According to UK tabloid The Sun, Southampton and Wolverhampton are interested in the Chicago Fire goalkeeper and could make an offer during the summer transfer window. Slonina is a young American goalkeeper that has started all six games of the 2022 MLS regular season and kept four clean sheets.
Chelsea is no longer an option
The 17-year-old had a previous deal with Chelsea, but due to the sanctions imposed by the UK government on owner Roman Abramovich, the Premier League side can no longer buy and sell players. The deal was worked on for several weeks in secret during the January transfer window and Chelsea took initiative to sign him because they were aware that Juventus was also interested in the teenager.
Slonina is one of the new American prospects and he is already a regular starter for the MLS side since the 2021 campaign. The 17-year-old joined the Fire in 2019 and even though his contract expires at the end of the current season, there is an option for a further year.
