Freddy Rincón, former Real Madrid player, in serious condition after traffic accident

The Colombian ex-soccer player was in a car that was involved in a crash with a bus in Cali. He has undergone surgery for head injuries.

Former Real Madrid and Colombia soccer player Freddy Rincón is in a serious condition after being involved in a traffic accident, involving the car he was in and a bus in the Colombian city of Cali. Four people were travelling in the car, including 55-year-old Rincón.

The injured individuals were taken to the Clínica Imbanaco for medical attention. The centre released a statement saying that Rincón had undergone surgery for his injuries. The surgery lasted two hours and five minutes and Rincón has been transferred to intensive care.

Laureano Quintero, medical head of the hospital said that the former player had suffered severe head injuries and that he is in a critical condition. “The situation is critical”, he explained.

The front of the bus that was involved in the collision was completely destroyed, while the vehicle in which Freddy Rincón was travelling in was badly damaged on its right hand side as can be seen from these photos of the scene of the accident, as tweeted by Caracol Radio Cali.

Colombian soccer legend

Rincón played for Napoli and Real Madrid in Europe, as well as Independiente Santa Fe and América de Cali in his home country. After his time in Europe he played for a number of major Brazilian clubs: Palmeiras, Corinthians, Santos and Cruzeiro. He retired from professional soccer in 2004.

He scored one of the most important goals in the history of the Colombia national team, against Germany in the San Siro in the 1990 World Cup to give them a 1-1 draw and ensure they qualified from the group stages. He also played for Colombia in the World Cup in the US in 94 and France 98.

Real Madrid and Corinthians were among the first clubs to send messages of support for their former player. Real Madrid sent their support and hoped for his quick recovery.
