A new chapter in the rivalry between the United States and Mexico will be written this summer as the two nations face off in the semi-finals of the Concacaf Nations League, which will be held at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada on 15 June.

Both teams will go into the clash with new head coaches, who will be desperate to make sure they have got their ideas across and imposed their style of play on their players in time for the last-four match-up, which will not only decide one of the two Conacaf Nations League finalists, but also the top nation in North America.

USMNT’s fine recent form against Mexico

While the USMNT will be looking to extend their recent domination over Mexico, El Tri will be going all out to bring to an end their negative streak against the Stars and Stripes, which began in 2019. Anthony Hudson’s men will have further opportunities to add to their four-match unbeaten run against their rivals in both the Concacaf Nations League and the Gold Cup, which will take place just a matter of weeks apart.

Will Mexico boss Cocca recall Chicharito?

After it was confirmed that the USMNT and Mexico would be facing off in the semi-finals, a rather cryptic Instagram story posted by Mexican striker Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández set tongues wagging. The LA Galaxy attacker hasn’t played for his country since 2019, shortly after Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino took charge, but his apparent interest in El Tri’s upcoming cup-tie has left many hoping that he would be open to returning to the fold to face the United States.

New Mexico boss Diego Cocca, who oversaw a 2-0 win away to Suriname and a 2-2 draw at home to Jamaica in his first two games in charge, has previously said that he would be willing to consider Hernández for selection; could the man who is already his country’s all-time leading goalscorer make a sensational return for a potential double-header against their biggest rivals?
