Although it has been almost half a decade since Javier Hernández last put on the green jersey of the national team, the forward has not lost hope. In an interview with Claro Sports, Chicharito declared that he still keeps alive his dream of being called up again with the Tricolor, although he is aware that he will have to work hard in Liga MX to earn a place.

Chivas will always be my priority, but obviously returning to the national team is a dream and I am also very clear about it, it is something that motivates me and makes me very excited.” In addition to that, the 35-year-old player confessed that he has not yet had contact with Jaime Lozano.

Would Chicharito play over Santiago Giménez?

The last time Chicharito played with the Mexican national team was in September 2019, in a friendly against Argentina. An off-field scandal in which several players were involved cost him a chance at a call-up. However, many years and managers have passed through the Federation, and a future call-up may be a possibility in a Mexico side that has also seen many new players come into the squad.

While many fans have clamoured for Chicharito to be given a second chance with El Tri, those voices have cooled since the explosion of Santiago Giménez onto the scene. The 22-year-old has lit up the Eredivisie with Feyenoord and has been linked with top teams across Europe such as Real Madrid and Barcelona, as well as various clubs in the Premier League.

When is Mexico’s next game?

Giménez has 19 goals in 19 games this season and as such, Chicharito would have to show seriously impressive form in order to usurp the youngster and take away his place in Jaime Lozano’s starting XI which won the Good Cup in 2023.

The team’s next match will be in March against Panama. The squad for the game has not been revealed, so it remains to be seen if Chicharito can wiggle his way into Lozano’s thoughts when the time comes to name the players for the clash. Don’t forget that there is a Copa América and World Cup on US soil across the next two years, something that gives an extra sense of importance to any national team squad over the next few months.
