Chivas Guadalajara and Club América meet for the third time in 10 days on Saturday, as Mexico’s ‘Clásico Nacional’ returns to the domestic stage after a continental double-header.

Will Chivas enjoy Champions Cup bounce?

Although it was América who progressed to the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup, Chivas ended a three-game losing run with a 3-2 win in Wednesday’s last-16 second leg - and Los Rojiblancos will now attempt to turn around their flagging Liga MX campaign.

The Guadalajarans sit ninth in the Clausura 2024 standings, three points off the automatic playoff spots, having won just one of their last five league games. Defending champions América, on the other hand, are second in the table, one point behind leaders Monterrey.

Chivas vs América: injuries and suspensions

This weekend’s match at Estadio Akron will see players from both sides miss out.

In addition to Jonathan ‘Cabecita’ Rodríguez, who is no longer being considered for selection by head coach André Jardine, América will have to do without defender Israel Reyes. The 23-year-old has undergone an operation after sustaining a knee injury in the midweek Champions Cup clash, and América have said in a statement that there is no clear timeline on his return to action.

Chivas, meanwhile, will be missing the suspended pair Víctor Guzmán and Jesús Orozco Chiquete. Both players picked up their fifth bookings of the Clausura 2024 in last weekend’s defeat to Club León, and will serve one-match bans. Guadalajara are also without Guillermo ‘Tiba’ Sepúlveda, who has a fractured cheekbone, and Pavel Pérez, José Castillo and Carlos Cisneros.
