A bad week for Chivas de Guadalajara has got worse with the news that head coach Veljko Paunóvic is the subject of an offer from LaLiga side Almeria.

Earlier this week a trio of Chivas players were suspended from the squad for “an indefinite period” for breaking the team’s internal rules. Now, it looks like they are set to lose Paunóvic after Almeria opened negotiations with the Serbian coach.

The 46-year-old spent much of his playing career in Spain and spent a year with Almeria in 2008. Reports suggest that negotiations have already started and look to be proceeding at pace. Paunóvic’s contract reportedly includes a clause that allows him to leave Chivas for a role in Europe.

Paunóvic is a highly-rated coach and he took Chivas to third place in the Clausura 2023 standings, finishing as runners-up in the playoffs. However he has reportedly fallen out with a number of key first team players, including Víctor Guzmán, Alexis Vega and Isaac Brizuela.

Vega, Cristian ‘Chicote’ Calderón and youth player Raúl Martínez, were issued with a punishment from the club earlier this week for violating internal rules. The club statement was did not go into specifics about the alleged infractions but it looks like Paunóvic is keen on a move away from Estadio Akron.
