Chivas emerge as Mexico’s Iceland saviors
Mexico boss Javier Aguirre has called up a raft of Chivas Guadalajara players for El Tri’s upcoming friendly with Iceland.
The Mexican national team is set for its international friendly against Iceland next week, to be played in Querétaro.
How many Chivas players are in the Mexico squad?
For this matchup, Javier Aguirre will be without El Tri’s Europe‑based players, forcing him to rely on call‑ups from Liga MX. Against this backdrop, Chivas Guadalajara has emerged as the foundation of the squad.
Seemingly influenced by Chivas’s position atop the Clausura 2026 standings, Aguirre has selected seven players from the club, which has won each of its first six games of the new Liga MX tournament.
There will be notable changes up front, as Club América’s Henry Martín is just returning from injury, and Germán Berterame is no longer eligible for this match after making the move to MLS with Inter Miami. The team will also be without Obed Vargas, Jorge Sánchez, Gilberto Mora, and Luis Romo.
