Interim Tottenham Hotspur boss Christian Stellini confirmed that he has spoken to Davinson Sanchez after last week’s disappointment against Bournemouth.

Spurs conceded in the 95th minute to lose at home to relegation-threatened Bournemouth. Sanchez in particular had a game to forget; booed by his own supporters, and being substituted just 25 minutes after being subbed on.

In the pre-match press conference ahead of Spurs’ trip to Newcastle United, Stellini said that he has spoken to the Colombian about the game.

“We had a good conversation and of course it is tough for a player to come in and then come out of the pitch,” Stellini said.

“It is the type of thing that also happened to me when I was played. It is not the best moment you can live but the type of thing that has to give you a reaction, a good reaction.”

“I asked him to have a good reaction, to train well and to do his best. He is a good guy, he understood the moment during the last game, so he accepted the situation.”

Sanchez booed by Spurs fans after early mistake

Last weekend Sanchez was introduced midway through the first half to replace the injured Clement Lenglet. A mistake from the Colombian allowed Dominic Solanke to give the Cherries the lead early in the second half but he had been booed by his fans since entering the fray.

Stellini was asked if he had ever seen something like that before, and the Italian said that he has sympathy with Sanchez.

It’s very rare [booing from your own fans] and I think it happened to some players,” Stellini said. “It’s important your reaction to have the fans back with you. I want to help him have this situation.”

The interim Spurs boss was then asked if he would like to see Sanchez given a more positive reception from the team’s fans this weekend.

“I hope this happens because players are before being players, they are men,” he replied.

They need the opportunity to react, the opportunity to do better, the opportunity to do their best. The fans are an important part of this.”
