Hirving Lozano is more than ready to take on a new challenge in the United States. The player of the recently founded San Diego FC sat down for an interview with ESPN in which he compared MLS with Liga MX, where he was champion with Pachuca in 2016.

Lozano admitted that both leagues are, as things stand, at an even level, but MLS “is growing in a better way” compared to the Mexican league and will soon overtake the division where he made his name as a top talent before making the move to Europe.

Lozano appreciates San Diego’s youth project

The winger also acknowledged that he chose San Diego club because of the beauty of the city and the quality of life he will have. As well as those things away from the pitch, he admitted to being excited about the idea that this he will join a new franchise where he wants to give everything he’s got to succeed. “I’ve been to San Diego with the Mexican national team”, he said, “I’ve visited a few times and it’s exciting to get to know the people, it’s a beautiful place.”

“I like the ‘Right to Dream’ (academy) initiative”, Lozano added, “it’s a good project that has grown, all while helping young players. I want to leave a mark, especially with the young players.”

Lozano will arrive in San Diego as a two-time back-to-back champion in Europe. In 2023 he was crowned a Serie A winner with Napoli, the team’s first Scudetto in 33 years; this season he won the Eredivisie with PSV. In MLS, he aspires to win another league title in what will be his fourth different country playing football, something never before done by a Mexican player.

As for San Diego FC, there have been rumblings that they are set to become the new ‘Real Madrid’ of MLS, although most likely this is a play on Inter Miami recruiting ex-Barcelona stars for their title challenge. However, one name has certainly stood out in recent weeks: that of Sergio Ramos. The ex-Real Madrid captain has been linked with a move to the new franchise and he would, should he join, certainly be a reason to link the San Diego side with Los Blancos.
