As he plots a path to Liga MX success in the Clausura 2024 tournament, Club América head coach André Jardine feels it’s vital to keep his title-winning squad from the Apertura 2023 together.

Indeed, Jardine has reportedly put the brakes on Salvador Reyes’ mooted departure from the 14-time Mexican champions, despite the arrival of fellow left-back Cristian ‘Chicote’ Calderón earlier this month.

Calderón has left Chivas Guadalajara to move to the Estadio Azteca, where Reyes already finds himself behind first-choice left-back Luis Fuentes in the pecking order.

América boss convinces Reyes to stay put

However, the journalist César Luis Merlo, who specialises in transfer news, says Jardine has persuaded Reyes not to join Necaxa on loan, even though he will now face even stiffer competition for a place in Las Águilas’ team.

América and Necaxa already had a deal in place for Reyes, who was expected to leave Mexico City in search of more regular game time, after making just five starts in the Apertura 2023 tournament.

Nexaca are now set to sign Chivas’ Alejandro Mayorga instead.

Who has departed América ahead of Clausura 2024?

The only player who has left América during the close season is veteran right-back Miguel Layún, who announced his retirement after Las Águilas’ Apertura 2023 final win over Tigres.

Another Americanista who has been tipped to depart is Uruguay centre-back Sebastián Cáceres, who has been attracting the attentions of clubs in Europe, chiefly Italy’s Serie A and England’s Premier League.

AS México has learned that Cáceres’ representatives are keeping close tabs on potential European interest, but the player is settled at América and may opt to wait and see what opportunities arise in the summer.

When is América’s first Clausura 2024 game?

On matchday one of the Clausura 2024 regular season, América visit Tijuana on Saturday 13 January 2024, with kick-off at the Estadio Caliente scheduled for 10pm ET/7pm PT.

TV viewers in the United States will be able to watch the game on TUDN USA.
