Argentine-born Mexican international striker Rogelio Funes Mori arrived in Mexico City on Monday to finalise his prospective move from Monterrey to Liga MX rivals Pumas, much to the delight of fans of the Auriazules, excited by the potential arrival one of Liga MX’s most prolific scorers in recent years.

The 32-year-old was mobbed by supporters as he arrived at Mexico City International Airport, with media also on hand to greet him before he made his way to Ciudad Universitaria.

Mexico recall among Funes Mori’s reasons for Pumas transfer

“I am very happy, I’m come to a very big club and a very important institution. In all honest, I didn’t want to leave Mexico, I wanted to continue playing here and it is a very good opportunity for me to come to Pumas,” revealed Funes Mori.

The striker also disclosed other reasons as to why he had opted to swap Rayados for UNAM: “They showed a lot of interest in me and I’ve known (manager) Gustavo Lema for a long time. Rayados is a closed chapter. I’ve come here to compete, I know the history of the club and playing in the national team is very important to me.”

What other players have UNAM signed?

Funes Mori has yet to undergo a medical and finalise some details of his contract. All being well, the attacker will join Guillermo Martínez, formerly of Puebla, and Peruvian midfielder Piero Quispe as new signings ahead of the Clausura 2024 tournament. Despite losing Juan Dinenno and Gabriel Fernández, Funes Mori’s arrival will give Pumas fans reason to believe they have strengthened in attack.
