Club América, Cruz Azul and Tigres at risk ahead of Liga MX season run-in
Four Mexican clubs battling to reach the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinals have other work to do in the Clausura 2026 tournament.
As the Clausura 2026 regular season in Liga MX enters its final stretch, one increasingly important storyline is the league’s U23 playing time rule. All 18 top-flight clubs are required to reach 1,170 minutes of action from players under the age of 23. The goal is to promote youth development across Mexican soccer.
Four clubs still short of the mark
After 14 matchdays, 14 clubs have already met the requirement. That leaves just four still needing to catch up: América, Toluca, Cruz Azul and Tigres.
All four teams share another common factor. They are also competing in the Concacaf Champions Cup, adding fixture congestion and competitive pressure to an already tight schedule.
What is the punishment for breaking the U23 playing time rule?
Failure to meet the requirement comes with a significant penalty: a three-point deduction in the overall standings.
While losing three points might not seem catastrophic in isolation, it could prove decisive for any of these clubs in a tightly packed table. It could impact qualification for the playoffs or final positioning.
In Liga MX, tiebreakers in the Liguilla playoffs are heavily influenced by regular-season standing, making every point crucial.
Minutes remaining for each club
Here is how many U23 minutes each team still needs to complete:
- América: 48 minutes
- Toluca: 88 minutes
- Cruz Azul: 104 minutes
- Tigres: 204 minutes
Balancing league rules and Concachampions ambitions
For now, these teams are focused less on the U23 requirement and more on advancing in the Concacaf Champions Cup.
América must beat Nashville SC by any score to advance. A high-scoring draw would eliminate them from the competition.
Toluca take a solid advantage into their second leg but conceded two away goals against LA Galaxy, meaning defensive discipline will be key to securing qualification.
Cruz Azul face the toughest challenge. They lost the first leg by three goals and failed to score an away goal against LAFC, meaning they will need a near-perfect performance to keep their hopes alive.
Tigres, meanwhile, produced a strong result in their first leg. If they manage to score away to the Seattle Sounders, they will tilt the tie significantly in their favor.
