Club América seal the worst kind of treble

Club América suffered a resounding failure and will end the first half of 2025 empty-handed. Just moments ago, they let their final opportunity slip away — a chance to qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup — falling 2–1 to LAFC in Los Angeles, California.

With this loss, the nightmare is complete. André Jardine’s team walks away with nothing.

América appeared at BMO Stadium, home of Los Angeles FC, for what was their last shot at silverware. The match started promisingly, with Brian Rodríguez scoring to put the visitors ahead 0–1. But LAFC equalized before full time, and in extra time, the MLS side secured the win, ending América’s hopes.

The downfall began in the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinals, where América was eliminated by Cruz Azul. Vicente Sánchez’s squad denied them a chance at the international title. To make matters worse, just last week, André Jardine’s team was knocked out of Liga MX contention by Toluca at the Nemesio Diez Stadium, ending their pursuit of a fourth consecutive league championship.

Once viewed as unstoppable, América is now mired in a rough patch. Their main goal — the international CCC title — slipped through their fingers. Then came Toluca, who turned Liga MX into a nightmare.
