Club América to share the Banorte Stadium with Cruz Azul and Atlante
Liga MX president Mikel Arriola confirmed that, after the World Cup, Cruz Azul and Atlante will share the newly renovated Banorte Stadium with Club América.
Although the Banorte Stadium (formerly Estadio Azteca) is not 100% completely renovated, the stadium will host a friendly match next Saturday, March 28 as Mexico face Portugal.
After the reopening, Club America will return home to face Nashville SC in the the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinals with select Liga MX matches to be staged in Coapa with Arriola confirming that the Aguilas will have to share their stadium.
During the launch of the ‘Mexico Wins, We All Win’ campaign, Arriola confirmed that after the World Cup, three teams will play their home games at the Banorte Stadium.
Before the renovation, Club América shared a stadium with Cruz Azul with the ‘Maquina’ set to return to the venue after this year’s World Cup but they won’t be the only tenants at the iconic stadium.
Arriola confirmed that Atlante, who are returning to the Liga MX for the Apertura 2026 season, will also return to what was their home on three occasions, first from 1966 to 1983, then from 1996 to 2000 and from 2004 to 2007, the year in which they emigrated to Cancun.
Atlante will play in Liga MX after spending 12 years playing in what is now called Liga de Expansión (essentially the Mexican second tier), where the Potros de Hierro were crowned champions three times.
With the commissioner’s confirmation, Cruz Azul, Atlante, and América will once again share a stadium after three decades, recalling that when Atlante returned in 1996, Cruz Azul moved to the Estadio de la Ciudad de los Deportes.
