Club América’s Gutiérrez mystery solved
There was no place for Alexis Gutiérrez in América’s roster for the Clásico Nacional defeat to Chivas Guadalajara at the weekend.
The sting of defeat in the Clásico Nacional hit hard for Club América supporters. Fans wasted no time voicing their frustration, particularly targeting the club’s recent signings. Among the most criticized was midfielder Alexis Gutiérrez, whose absence from the match against Chivas sparked outrage and confusion.
Gutiérrez was a last-minute omission from André Jardine’s matchday squad, and speculation quickly spread across social media. Many questioned whether the 25-year-old was even part of the coach’s plans anymore.
Two days after the loss, the mystery was cleared up. According to ESPN journalist Ismael Malagón, Gutiérrez was sidelined due to a knock sustained during training in the lead-up to the game. The injury prevented him from training at full intensity, prompting Jardine and his staff to leave him out of the squad to avoid further risk.
A month without minutes in Liga MX
Injury aside, Gutiérrez’s lack of playing time has become a glaring issue. Of the four reinforcements América brought in for the Apertura 2025, the former Cruz Azul man has had the least impact.
So far this season, Gutiérrez has logged just 172 minutes across four appearances and hasn’t featured in Liga MX action since August 9, when América edged Querétaro 1-0 on Matchday 4. For a player acquired at a reported cost of nearly $5 million, his contribution has been minimal.
América front office under fire
The backlash from fans has been fierce. Many are questioning the club’s transfer strategy, especially given the high expectations surrounding Gutiérrez’s arrival. His limited involvement and lack of production have fueled criticism toward América’s front office, with supporters demanding accountability for what increasingly looks like a misfire in the transfer market.
With other midfield options underperforming and injuries piling up, the pressure is mounting on Gutiérrez to prove his worth. Whether he can bounce back and justify the investment remains to be seen - but for now, the frustration among América fans is palpable.
