There are just over six months left until the Copa América 2024 starts. Starting on 20 June, ten teams from Conmebol and 6 guests from Concacaf will battle for glory with the tournament set to be staged in the United States. This Thursday evening in Miami, one of the host cities of the competition, the group stage draw will take place as anticipation ahead of the tournament builds.

Two participating nations have yet to be confirmed with the final two sides emerging from the CONCACAF playoffs involving (Honduras vs. Costa Rica and Canada vs. Trinidad and Tobago).

In the group stage, the 16 participants will be divided into 4 zones of 4 teams each with the top two teams in each group advancing to the quarterfinals.

Copa América pots

A few days ago, Conmebol confirmed the pots for the first phase draw. The Colombian national team will be in Pot 2, along with Uruguay, Ecuador and Peru. Argentina, current champions, Mexico, USA and Brazil are in top seeded Pot 1.

POT 1: Argentina (Seeded Group A), Mexico (Group B), United States (Group C) and Brazil (Group D)
POT 2: Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru
POT 3: Chile, Panama, Venezuela and Paraguay
POT 4: Jamaica, Bolivia, Canada/Trinidad and Tobago and Honduras/Costa Rica

Possible group of death for Colombia

Taking into account the pots, Colombia will not meet Uruguay, Ecuador or Peru (they are also in Pot 2) in the group stage.

Néstor Lorenzo’s team could face World Cup holders Argentina or the always dangerous Brazil, two of the teams that are expected to go all the way in the competition with no group permitted to have more than three Conmebol teams.

Therefore, a group with Argentina, Venezuela and Canada (if they qualify) is a possibility and would provide a stern test for Colombia.

Argentina start as favourites

The Albiceleste will head into the 2024 tournament as strong favourites after their World Cup in Qatar and solid start to the South American 2026 World Cup qualifiers. La Vinotinto are one of the dark horses of the competition and are currently in fourth place in the World Cup qualifying group with Canada arguably the strongest CONCACAF side in Pot 4, assuming Les Rouges prevail in their playoff.
