The knockout stage of the 2024 Copa América is all set, featuring four exciting quarter-final matchups: Argentina vs Ecuador, Venezuela vs Canada, Colombia vs Panama, and, arguably the pick of the bunch, Uruguay vs Brazil. All eight teams will be determined to make it to the semi-finals of the tournament, vying for glory on U.S. soil. How the home team would love to be part of it.

As these games are, as the term ‘knockout’ suggests, single-elimination matches, there is no margin for error. Heading into the competition, Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil were initially favoured. However, Colombia has now emerged as a strong contender, raising their profile among fans and casual observers.

What are the quarter-final stadiums?

The last eight games will unfold in four iconic venues, promising plenty of drama and action: NRG Stadium in Houston, AT&T Stadium in Arlington, State Farm Stadium in Glendale, and Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Excitement is close to fever pitch as these nations battle it out.

Are penalties used to decide Copa América games?

Ahead of the 2024 Copa América being held in the United States, CONMEBOL announced a specific rule change regarding the match format for the tournament. During the quarterfinals, semifinals, and the third-place match, and unlike Euro 24 and most other similar competitions, there will be no extra time; matches that end in a draw after 90 minutes will go directly to penalties to determine the winner.

However, the approach to the final, scheduled to be held at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Sunday 14 July, will be different. If the final match ends in a tie, there will first be an extra time period of 30 minutes. If the score remains tied after this period of two 15 minutes, the winner will then be decided by a penalty shootout. Thus, extra time will only be used in the grand finale, if necessary.
