The knockout stage of the 2024 Copa América gave us four exciting quarter-final matchups: Argentina vs Ecuador, Venezuela vs Canada, Colombia vs Panama, and, arguably the pick of the bunch, Uruguay vs Brazil. All eight teams were determined to make it to the semi-finals of the tournament, vying for glory on U.S. soil.

While the competition’s hosts were knocked out in the group phase, they would soon be joined by another surprise exit. Brazilian players headed off to the beach early as we were left with semifinal clashes of Argentina vs Canada and Uruguay vs Colombia. As these games are, as the term ‘knockout’ suggests, single-elimination matches, there remained no margin for error, and it was Lionel Scaloni and Nestor Lorenzo’s teams that made it into the showpiece final.

Are penalties used to decide Copa América games?

Ahead of the 2024 Copa América being held in the United States, CONMEBOL announced a specific rule change regarding the match format for the tournament. During the quarterfinals, semifinals, and the third-place match, and unlike Euro 24 and most other similar competitions, there would be no extra time. Matches that ended in a draw after 90 minutes would go directly to penalties to determine the winner.

However, the approach to the final will be different.

If the final match ends in a tie, there will first be an extra-time period of 30 minutes. If the score remains tied after this period of two 15 minutes, the winner will then be decided by a penalty shootout, initially five takers as per normal rules. Thus, extra time will only be used in the grand finale, if necessary.
