Jaime Lozano’s side have not yet secured passage to the 2024 competition and El Tri have crucial games to play before the end of the year.

Can Mexico qualify for the Copa América?

Mexico finished the October internationals with an impressive 2-2 draw against Germany, but still have work to do if they are to make it to the Copa América next year.

Jaime Lozano’s team will be back in action in November as they look to secure their place in the 2024 tournament. They take on Honduras in a two-legged quarter-final of the Concacaf Nations League, with the winner guaranteeing their place.

On paper El Tri are the big favourites but Honduras will be desperate to progress and secure a spot in the Copa América.

For the 2024 tournament in the United States, six teams from Concacaf will be included. The first four places will be decided through the Concacaf Nations League, with the four semi-finalists for this year’s competition securing guaranteed qualification for the Copa América.

Those fixtures will be held on the November FIFA dates...

Concacaf Nations League - Quarter-finals

  • Honduras vs Mexico
  • Panama vs Costa Rica
  • USA vs Trinidad and Tobago

What happens if Mexico lose to Honduras?

Losing to Honduras would be a humiliation for a Mexico side who looked good against Germany and Ghana during the recent internationals. However, even if El Tri are beaten they would still be confident of making it to the Copa América.

The four losing Concacaf Nations League quarter-finals will go head-to-head, with two of the four advancing to the finals.

In short, six of the eight teams involved in the Nations League quarter-finals will be going the the US next year to compete against the likes of Argentina and Brazil for the Copa América title. The competition is usually restricted to the Conmebol sides in South America, but next year’s edition has been expanded to a pan-continental 16-team tournament.
