Mexico drew against Germany in their second game of the recent international break, and left the stadium feeling that a win was not out of the reach of the side who played well, pleasing both the fans and the press. The players too also showed themselves as recognising a good performance against a team that, in theory, had more than enough firepower to trouble the side: Ochoa spoke about the positive vibes, as did Edson.

After the game, Edson Álvarez spoke to the press and made it clear that games of this calibre serve as the true tests for the side, and more so given the fact that two huge international tournaments are right around the corner: Copa América 2024 and World Cup 2026.

‘We don’t look like favourites, but if we don’t play we’ll never know’

We want this type of game, a lot of the time we don’t look like favourites on paper, but if we don’t play them then we’ll never know. I’m very happy with the performance, the effort of all my teammates against a Germany side that you can call however you want, their A, B or Z team, but we performed well and we are going to learn a lot from this, I hope we keep on having this level of performance”, said the West Ham midfielder about the game against Nagelsmann’s team.

The Premier League midfielder also commented on the strengths and weaknesses of the team, explaining clearly exactly what the side have to work on for next time: “the Mexican players have shown their individual quality, but we need to work a lot more on the collective side of things, I think we were compact and fairly together, when we could press, we did.”

‘We took the initiative and had quite a few chances’

Obviously we played against a great team who knows how to play”, he continued, “and they did us a few times, but we also played our own game, we took the initiative and had quite a few chances to score too”.

At the end, Álvarez spoke about the plan put together by Jaime Lozano, one that continues to bind the squad together and get everyone on the same page. “We will continue working on the same lines, everyone does different things at club level but when we come to the national team you have to change your way of thinking and work under the orders of Jimmy”. At long last, things seem to be going well for El Tri.
