COPA AMÉRICA 2024

Canada possible lineup against Venezuela in the 2024 Copa América match

Here’s how Jesse Marsch’s side look set to go into the tough tie against Venezuela.

The Copa América rolls into the knockout phase over the next few days and one of the more intriguing ties is almost upon us. Jesse March’s Canada will take on Fernando Batista’s Venezuela (July 5, 2024 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT) in a game that is potentially the hardest to call in the competition so far.

Canada got through a potentially tricky Group A in the first phase of the tournament, coming second in a group that contained Argentina, Chile and Perú. Marsch’s narrow style, which has had varying levels of success during his time as a head coach in Europe, seems to fit the players he has in this current Canada squad, and 6 points from a possible 9 was a great statement and a secure platform on which to build.

If the Canadians’ efforts have surprised, then Venezuela’s performances have shocked and stunned. La Vinotinto, who have participated in all 20 tournaments since 1967, flew to the top of Group B, breezing past Ecuador, Mexico and Jamaica, getting 9 points from 9 and looking like true dark horses to go far in the competition.

Canada and Venezula: suspension and injury news

Tajon Buchanan suffered a shock broken leg just a few days ago in training, and as such he won’t be an option for Canada, who will likely turn to Liam Millar as a wide threat.

As for Venezuela, the only absence expected is winger Darwin Machís, who picked up two yellow cards in the group stage and will not be able to feature.

Who will play for Canada against Venezuela?

Canada potential XI against Venezuela:

GK: Crépeau

DEF: Johnston - Bombito - Cornelius - Davies

MID: Millar - Eustáquio - Koné - Laryea

ATT: David - Larin

The upcoming tie will only be the third time these sides have met in an official game, with the previous two matches ending in a draw. That cannot happen this time, as any game that is level after 90 minutes will go straight to penalties.

The game between Canada and Venezuela will take place on July 5, 2024 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
