COPA AMERICA

Why is the camera angle different in the USMNT - Uruguay Copa América match?

The first half of the USMNT match against Uruguay in their Copa America had fans calling it unwatchable and not for the action on the field.

The USMNT are out of the Copa America thanks to a late goal by Uruguay. But for many fans, that was not the worst part of the night.

Everyone was already scratching their heads at the choice of camera placement by Fox Sports 1. In the 41st minute of the game, the angle switched back to the normal angle. For reference, here are the two angles. The first is the offending angle and the second a previous game in the same stadium.

Later, Fox announcers confirmed on air that they had been using the world feed for the first half and then switched to their own cameras. This means that the camera placement was the work, not of Fox, but of CONMEBOL productions.

The game was played in Arrowhead Stadium and it looks as if the confusion may have arisen from the unfamiliarity with the location.

CONMEBOL is a South American organization and normally deals with stadiums designed for soccer only. Arrowhead is, of course, the home of the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs and while it is a dual-use stadium, the areas for camera placement are often better suited to the gridiron version of the game.

It looks as if they simply chose the wrong spot at the top of the stadium, outstanding for the NFL where it is vital to see the entire field of play, but not nearly intimate enough to appreciate the individual skill of the beautiful game.
