Could AEK Athens’ Mexico international Orbelín Pineda join River Plate?
Argentinian giants River Plate are being linked with a move for AEK Athens’ Pineda, 27, who has impressed on loan from Celta Vigo.
In the wake of Orbelín Pineda’s good performances for Greek side AEK Athens this season, one of South America’s biggest clubs is reportedly eyeing a move for the Mexico international.
River look to Almeyda to aid Pineda pursuit
According to One Football, Argentinians River Plate are keeping close tabs on Pineda’s progress in Europe and could be about to take the 27-year-old back across the Atlantic.
The report adds that the identity of AEK’s head coach, former River player and boss Matías Almeyda, could be a factor in helping Los Millonarios secure a deal for Pineda, who is on loan in Athens from Spanish club Celta Vigo.
River to make end-of-season Pineda call
One Football notes that River will wait until the end of the season before making a final assessment on Pineda’s performances and deciding whether to go ahead with a swoop for the midfielder, who has been capped 52 times by Mexico.
This term, Pineda has made 37 appearances in all competitions for AEK, scoring nine times and supplying three assists for the capital club.
With four games to go in the league season, the 12-time Greek champions sit second in the top-flight table, level on points with leaders Panathinaikos.
