Could Guillermo Almada take over from Jaime Lozano as Mexico manager?
The Pachuca manager has long been linked with the job of managing El Tri. Until now, it’s never come to fruition.
Pachuca’s manager, Guillermo Almada, has been in the orbit of the Mexican Football Federation as an option to take charge of the Mexican National Team. However, after the 2022 World Cup failure under Tata Martino, Almada did not make the final cut and Diego Cocca was selected ahead of him.
In an interview with Fox Sports, the coach indicated that the only thing that keeps him dreaming at the moment is to be able to coach a national team and ideally in the country that adopted him: Mexico.
While it is true that El Tri have indeed improved under Lozano, the thumping loss to the USMNT in the final of the CONCACAF Nations League did little to help the confidence of the side that still clearly have a long way to go to be considered potentially the best side in the confederation.
Almada wants to take over Mexico National Team
“The only thing that keeps me dreaming is to lead a national team at some point. We have strong convictions that we can make a contribution to [the game] and we can contribute to growth,” said Almada.
However, the manager, who is Uruguayan by birth, commented that he does not want to let anyone down right now because he has a huge commitment to Los Tuzos. He reiterated the fact that that any manager would want to take over one the big four in Mexico’s prestigious Liga MX.
“Any coach would like to coach Chivas, America, Monterrey, Tigres... but [Almada and his coaching staff] feel very grateful to Pachuca and we don’t want to let anyone down,” said Almada.
It is important to mention that Pachuca are in fifth place in the Liga MX Clausura table with 22 points and has every possibility of getting into the fight for a direct playoff spot, which is why these last few games will be key for the Tuzos’ aspirations in this competition.
Pachuca play Toluca at home in Liga MX before taking on Costa Rican side Herediano twice in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, either side of a clash against Tigres. They come up against Chivas in another tough league tie before Santos Laguna awaits ahead of the final Clausura match day game: a home tie against Mazatlán.
Monterrey currently lead the league with a 3 point advantage over André Jardine’s Club América. Monterrey will take on Inter Miami in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, adding to their tricky end of the season. As for América, who have won just one game less than their title rivals, take on New England Revolution in their tasty two-legged tie.
