Could Luis Súarez move to Liga MX and Cruz Azul?
Uruguay striker Luis Suárez is a free agent after leaving Nacional and is reportedly set for a move to Liga MX.
The winter transfer window is starting to heat up, with lots of rumours swirling in some places and player moves being confirmed in others. One of the big stories centres around Cruz Azul, with La Máquina having reportedly made a formal offer to iconic Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez.
Luis Suárez “offered a two-year contract” by Cruz Azul
According to Argentinian journalist César Luis Merlo, the Mexico City-based outfit have made an official move to sign the attacker on a two-year contract. Uruguayan media have also reported that talks haven taken place between the club and Suárez, claiming that an agreement was close to being reached between the two parties, although nothing has as yet been confirmed.
During last summer’s transfer window, Uruguayan coach Diego Aguirre, who left Los Celestes after just under three months in charge following a 7-0 thrashing at the hands of Club América, had discussions with the former Barcelona striker, who opted instead to return to his homeland to play for Nacional, the club where he started his career and who were participating in the Copa Sudamericana. Suárez, however, left Nacional before the Qatar 2022 World Cup and is currently a free agent.
After moving to Europe in 2006, Suárez scored a total of 425 goals in 658 games in all competitions, including 59 for Barcelona in the 2015-16 season. The striker, who has netted 68 times in 137 appearances for his country, didn’t have the best of World Cup campaigns, starting two of Uruguay’s three matches – in which he failed to score – as they were eliminated in the group stage.
