Will Mexico stay in Mexico City?
Based on the official 2026 FIFA World Cup schedule, Mexico is currently set to play its Round of 16 match at Mexico City Stadium.
That would mark another appearance at one of the tournament’s most high-profile venues. Playing in Mexico City could offer El Tri a significant advantage, with strong local support expected to create a high-energy atmosphere similar to what the team experienced in its previous match.

Mexico’s World Cup history in the Round of 16
Advancing past the Round of 16 has long been a hurdle for Mexico on the World Cup stage. El Tri has frequently reached this phase of the tournament but has struggled to break through to the quarterfinals in recent decades.

And if they do reach the quarterfinals, it would be just the third time in the team’s history. The other times they reached the quarterfinals, interestingly, were in 1970 and 1986, both on home soil.
Why the venue matters
While the opponent will ultimately shape the matchup, remaining in Mexico City would minimize travel and allow the team to stay in a familiar setting, both of which can be valuable advantages in a condensed tournament schedule.
As the tournament progresses, confirmation of both the opponent and match details will finalize Mexico’s path in the knockout stage. Mexico’s World Cup run is far from over, and the next chapter will unfold on home soil once again.
