Thibaut Courtois underwent surgery this morning to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The Belgian goalkeeper suffered the tear in training on 10 August, just two days before the team’s opening league game of the new season against Athletic Club. Losing the first-choice keeper at a key moment was a huge blow which left the club in shock and left Ancelotti up against the clock to find a replacement.

“Our player Thibaut Courtois underwent successful surgery today for a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee by Dr. Manuel Leyes, under the supervision of the Real Madrid Medical Services,” the club confirmed through its official website.

With Courtois expected to be out of action for around nine month, Madrid brought in Kepa Arrizabalaga this week. The Spanish goalkeeper joins on a one-year loan from Chelsea after turning down a chance to join Bayern Munich.
