Miami has descended into a frenzy with Lionel Messi’s imminent arrival. But concerns have been voiced in some quarters. Fox presenter Brian Kilmeade feels that communication could present a bit of a problem for Spanish-speaking Messi - even in Florida, where around 22% of the population speak Spanish.
In a bizarre discourse on this weekend’s Fox and Friends show, Kilmeade stated that he hopes Messi will take a leaf out of David Beckham’s book and “learn to speak English”.
“Beckham learned English for us, but had an accent”
“The one thing I worry about, he doesn’t speak English. I wanna see him sit down and talk. One thing about David Beckham, he learned to speak English for us - with an accent,” Kilmeade argued. “When he came at 32 years old. Messi said this, ‘If it had been a matter of money, I’d have gone to Arabia or elsewhere. It seemed like a lot of money to me. The Truth is that my final decision goes elsewhere and not because of money’”.
Beckham, who was born in London, is England’s third most capped player with 115 appearances for his country and captained the Three Lions for a number of years. He moved to LA Galaxy in 2007 to star in Major League Soccer - and apparently to also get to grips with the lingo...
