Crunch time for Vinícius and Real Madrid: showdown talks are imminent
After reporting for preseason training tomorrow, Vinícius Júnior is poised to hold key negotiations with Real Madrid.
It is a matter of hours now. The moment is approaching when the uncertainty that has surrounded his future for the last year and a half must finally be resolved. Vinícius Junior and Real Madrid’s hierarchy are set to meet once the Brazilian returns from vacation, exactly as planned and as previously reported by Diario AS. The forward is scheduled to arrive back in the Spanish capital today, before reporting for training under José Mourinho tomorrow.
That will be the moment when he first informs his head coach, and then the club’s executives, of his true intentions regarding his immediate future and the status of a contract extension with just 11 months remaining on his current deal. A new agreement would ensure he stays at Madrid. If no deal is struck, the outlook changes completely, and an exit can no longer be ruled out. Nothing has changed so far, and the script remains exactly as expected: World Cup, vacation, and then the decisive meeting.
Both sides continue to signal that their intention is to sign a new contract, but until the face-to-face talks actually take place, nobody can say for certain what will happen. At Valdebebas, club officials insist they have no knowledge of Arsenal’s reported interest, a rumor that has gathered momentum over the past week. No official approach has been communicated to the club. Vinícius’ representatives, meanwhile, deny that any agreement exists with the Champions League runners-up.
Real optimism over Vini future
Inside Real Madrid, there is confidence stemming from the messages the Brazilian has conveyed during recent discussions. Club executives trust what the player expressed in their last conversation, when he indicated a desire to remain. Madrid’s offer is not expected to change, or at least not to the level requested by Vinícius.
In February 2025, amid strong interest from Saudi Arabia, sources close to the player told this newspaper that an agreement was close to being finalized. That signature, however, never arrived, and circumstances have led to a year and a half passing without anyone seeing a new contract. Madrid’s leadership wants Vinícius to make his position clear and, if he truly does not intend to renew, say so openly. From there, the club would move forward, assess the transfer market, and determine the best course of action.
In the upcoming meeting, both Real Madrid and Vinícius want to find out whether the other’s stance has shifted. Throughout this process, the sticking point has been financial, and each side now wants clarity on what the other is really thinking. The Brazilian is well aware of how previous high-profile contract standoffs with the club have ended. Players such as Sergio Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldo, Mesut Özil and Ángel Di María all eventually moved on.
At this stage, the situation goes beyond a simple adjustment or improvement to Madrid’s offer. The club wants to understand what Vinícius truly wants, regardless of any maneuvering by his representatives, with whom the forward remains closely aligned. The ball is in his court. Saudi Arabia faded from the picture two years ago. Arsenal are waiting in the wings, but beginning a new season with a contract ticking down toward expiration is hardly an ideal scenario for either player or club. The scheduled meeting could produce any number of outcomes. Nothing has been decided, and plenty of the speculation remains just that: speculation.
