Cruz Azul chasing UNAM striker Juan Dinenno after poor Apertura 2023 start

Pumas’ asking price has previously put La Máquina off but Ricardo Ferretti wants a new striker as soon as possible.

Cruz Azul have made it through to the knockout stages of the 2023 Leagues Cup but Ricardo Ferretti is still keen to strengthen his roster for the Apertura 2023 tournament, which has started in disastrous fashion. La Máquina have lost each of their first three Liga MX matches this season and currently find themselves bottom of the table. Could Juan Dinenno be the man to help them out of their current predicament?

Cruz Azul’s long-standing interest in Dinenno

UNAM’s Argentinian striker is once again being viewed as the solution to their goalscoring issues, with the fact that he has already spent more than three years playing in Mexico and would, in theory, hit the ground running making him a very attractive proposition.

Cruz Azul’s admiration for Dinenno is long-standing but Pumas’ asking price has always kept the 28-year-old out of reach. But with Los Celestes struggling for form domestically, club bosses have reignited their interest and are hopeful of initiating talks with UNAM.

Could Lotti make way for Dinenno?

However, it is far from being a done deal, with other obstacles that must also be overcome. La Máquina, for instance, would have to free up a slot on their roster for a foreign player, which could see Augusto Lotti, another Argentine, sacrificed. The forward has been linked with Lanus in his homeland.

In any case, Cruz Azul are determined to sign a striker before the end of the Liga MX registration window and would like to get Dinenno through the door as soon as possible. Pumas boss Antonio Mohamed, meanwhile, has claimed he is happy with his roster but would be forced to dip into the transfer market if his first-choice forward were to leave.
