In just seven days Martín Anselmi has managed to turn Cruz Azul’s results around and silence the team’s critics. His side beat Querétaro 1-3 on Friday - their third consecutive victory in the Clausura 2024, following on from home wins over Mazatlán (2-1) and the Xolos de Tijuana (1-0).

One game at a time, says the boss

The light blues’ victories came against rivals in the lower part of the table - teams occupying 18th, 16th and 15th positions in the standings. Nevertheless, it’s a vast improvement on the start they had to the last tournament, the Apertura 2023, in which they picked up just one point in as many games. Coach Martín Anselmi is taking it all in his stride. The Argentinean spoke after the victory at the La Corregidora, telling reporters, “We’re still a team in construction and I am not saying that just for effect. We will it game by game, training session by training session. The only thing that really fills my heart is seeing the dedication that the players show every single day. They’ve played three games in six days. We couldn’t prepare much for this game during the week. I like how they represent us. It had been a long time since the team had won three consecutive games - maybe not since the previous tournament. With humility, calmness and hard work, our plan is to compete and build a little more”.

Anselmi feels his team is on the right path, as he added, “They are processes we need to follow. I have always believe that. You can win, draw or lose, but you must always compete and keep improving - that’s the daily objective. Neither when we lose are we the worst, nor are we the best when we win”.

At least this week Cruz Azul will have a few more days to get their energy back. Anselmi’s team play host to mid-table Atlético San Luis in matchday 6 of the Clausura 2024. That game will take place on Saturday 10 February at the Ciudad de los Deportes stadium. San Luis, who face Chivas this evening, have two wins and two defeats so far this season.
