Pumas haven’t had the best of luck on their recent travels to Estadio Universitario de San Nicolás de los Garza and their dismal run continued in Week 5 of the Clausura 2024. The Auriazules came away from Nuevo León with the 2-2 draw against Tigres on Saturday - a result that gives them a point for their cause, but maintains their bad streak in UANL territory.

Pumas off to a bad start in Nuevo León

Gustavo Lema’s team found themselves behind on the scoreboard when Nico Ibáñez rifled in at the back post on 43 minutes. Their situation took another turn for the worst when Nathan Silva handled inside the box with 49 minutes on the clock. Nico stepped up to take the resulting penalty, sent Julio González the wrong way to notch his second of the game. Pumas’ response came soon after - Guillermo Martínez headed in from a corner on 72 minutes and was on target again three minutes later, the goal being given following a check for handball.

Last win at Tigres over a decade ago

The last time the Pumas emerged victorious from the home of Tigres was on 25 January in the Clausura 2014. On that occasion, the Auriazules beat UANL 1-2 with Martín Bravo grabbing both goals for the visitors and Guido Pizarro finding the net for the hosts.

The result leaves Pumas in eighth position in the general table with 8 points. It’s still early days of course and Lema’s men are safe in the play-in places and still with a good chance of fighting for the direct qualification places to the Liguilla.

Tigres meanwhile are one of three teams on 11 points at the top of the standings. They are currently level with Monterrey and América on 11 points in third. They are guests of Santos Laguna next weekend while Pumas are at home to 14th-placed Puebla. However, before that, Pachuca have the chance to go top - to do so they must beat León in Wednesday’s rescheduled matchday 2 clash at Estadio Hidalgo.
