Cruz Azul will go for Carlos Vela if they cannot sign Alexis Vega

The Mexican side will try to convince the MLS star to join them if they cannot tie down their top transfer target.

Reports suggest that Mexican side Cruz Azul may try to tempt Carlos Vela away from LAFC if they cannot seal a deal for Alexis Vega, their top transfer target.

Just as it finally looked as though Alexis Vega would join Cruz Azul, the appearance of a Turkish team into the equation meant negotiations between the board of directors of La Máquina and Chivas were put on pause. Cruz Azul, as a result, have been forced into looking down their list at other options to have in the pipeline in case Vega’s deal ultimately falls through.

According to TUDN’s Adrián Esparza Oteo, the Liga MX side are now analysing the possibility of bringing in either Sebastián Córdova or Carlos Vela, in the case that Vega’s signing does not come to fruition.

Vega and Cruz Azul negotiations halted due to Turkish interest

Negotiations stalled at the moment between Cruz Azul and Alexis Vega!” wrote Esparza Oteo late on December 29.

Cruz Azul are analysing other options in case Vega cannot be signed. Carlos Vela and Sebastián Córdova have been approached,” the TUDN reporter added.

How much would Vela cost?

However, the website Bola VIP went even further than TUDN, saying that the two named players had not been merely ‘approached’ by Cruz Azul, but that there are have already been talks with the former LAFC player, while negotiations with Córdova are even said to be “advanced”. The report also claims only one player will be signed this window ahead of the Clausura 2024.

According to Transfermarkt, the Tigres forward would cost Los Cementeros somewhere in the region of $7 million. Vela’s situation, on the other hand, looks completely different as despite negotiations taking place, he has not renewed with LAFC and would arrive on a free transfer to the Estadio Azteca.
