Diogo Jota, the ‘wolf’ who conquered Anfield
The Portuguese striker made his mark with Wolves and Liverpool, becoming one of the Premier League’s most admired forwards.

The death of Diogo Jota has shaken the world of football and beyond. He arrived in England as a young, unknown talent – and it is where he will always be remembered with deep affection. Affection he earned through goals and trophies. Twice a UEFA Nations League winner with Portugal’s senior team, he began his professional journey with Paços de Ferreira and Porto.
The Jota story
Atlético Madrid signed him in 2016, but he never made an appearance in their colors. Then, at just 21, Wolverhampton came calling under manager Nuno Espírito Santo.

Jota landed at Molineux Stadium in 2018 – initially on loan and then permanently – and quickly became one of Wolves’ standout stars in their return to the Premier League. For many fans, he is a club legend.
The Portuguese forward helped lead the team from the Championship to European competition. His impact across 131 appearances, scoring 44 goals and providing 13 assists, was so profound that Jürgen Klopp made a decisive move to bring him to Liverpool.

The $46 million (€43m) Liverpool paid for his transfer in 2021 was money well spent. The club had secured the services of a quiet but lethal striker – a game-changer off the bench and a key presence alongside Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané.
Jota’s 65 goals and 21 assists for Liverpool made him a fan favorite at Anfield and helped the club win an FA Cup, two Carabao Cups, and their long-awaited 20th league title.
