Emery on Martínez: “We will talk about the celebrations”

The Spanish head coach showed pride in his Aston Villa player’s World Cup success, but said they will have a chat about his celebrations.

Emi Martínez was one of the stars of the 2022 World Cup, helping Argentina claim their third title. The goalkeeper performed heroically in the penalty shootout wins over the Netherlands and France. His dancing and celebrations were the most talked-about and eye-catching, almost more so than his hairstyle with the Argentinian flag dyed on the side of his head.

The goalkeeper won the World Cup and continues to be on everyone’s lips. In the Lusail stadium, he grabbed the golden glove award for best goalkeeper of the tournament and put it between his legs in response to boos. Back in Argentina, the goalkeeper pulled out a dummy with Kylian Mbappé's face on it and carried him around as if he were his father. Once again, the controversy continued.

Dibu, as he’s known by many, will return to Birmingham in a few days to play for his club Aston Villa. Unai Emery, his club manager, is proud of his recent success, but says he will have a conversation about his behaviour. “When you have big emotions it’s difficult to control. I will talk to him next week about some celebrations. I respect that he is with his national team. When he is with us, under our responsibility, we can talk to him,” said the Villa boss.

“We were already at Arsenal together and we know each other. I am very happy to work with him,” he added.

“We are very proud of him. Every Villa fan should be very proud. He will be back next week, now he has to rest after a lot of emotions and hard work,” Emery added.

Possible signings at Villa

Emery also opened the door to new additions during the winter transfer window. “We are working now on something we can add in the next transfer window. I’m very happy with the players we have, but some could leave and some could come in to help us in the next few months.

“We are working and are really moving in the direction to sign players that will help us to clearly improve our performances. Players that will be with us in the way we want to play and the goals we have in front of us,” he said.
