Bernd Reichart, CEO of A22, the company behind the European Super League, confirmed in an interview with the German magazine Kicker that preparations are underway to launch the new competition.

Reichart, the German executive hired for the project, stated that reducing TV rights costs and offering an improved product are key objectives. “We are exploring new technologies and business models because we believe soccer fans deserve a better and more affordable viewing experience,” he explained.

Reichart, who previously led the RTL channel before joining the project spearheaded by Real Madrid, criticised the current Champions League format, saying it hasn’t met expectations. He pointed to recent lopsided results, such as Bayern’s 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb and Borussia Dortmund’s 7-1 victory over Celtic Glasgow, as examples.

“In our view, matches are more engaging when everything is at stake and teams compete on equal terms. That’s why we support a traditional league format with home-and-away matches followed by a playoff,” he said. As for a potential date for things to get going, sources within the organisation have told AS that the goal is to start in September 2025.

At the moment, only two teams, Real Madrid and Barcelona, are yet to formally reject the previous proposal of the competition.

Reichart also referenced a recent European Court of Justice ruling on Lass Diarra, in which the Superliga was mentioned 35 times. He concluded that this judgment signals the “foundations of the monopolistic governing bodies are beginning to crumble.”

The last time the Super League presented a plan of how to govern and run football, it was shot down by fans, the majority in England, after huge protests broke out across the country against the idea of a Super League. Let’s see how this attempt goes for those involved with Reichart.
