Mexico is on the verge of exiting the 2022 FIFA World Cup early after tying 0-0 against Poland in the group stage opener and losing 2-0 to Argentina on matchday two. The Mexican national team has yet to score a goal so far this tournament and they need to defeat Saudi Arabia by a large margin to secure a spot in the knockout stages.

If they fail to advance to the round of 16, it will be the first time since 1978 that they haven’t made it past the group stage. Following the defeat against Lionel Messi and co. on Saturday night, El Tri returned back for recovery practice on Sunday with their saddened faces and very little dialogue amongst the players.

Mexico trying to cheer up the players

The team managed by Gerardo Martino is against the ropes and they need a small miracle to advance to the next round. So the Mexican Soccer Federation decided to let the players’ families inside their hotel, the Simaisma, a Murwab resort and they also brought in a camel and a hawk so everyone could take pictures for the memories and cheer them up.

There was also a group meeting with Parma Aragón, the psychologist of the team, for around 45 minutes to talk about Mexico’s latest results at the World Cup. These two events helped the players relax and focus on the most important game ahead of them, against Saudi Arabia on November 30 at the Lusail Stadium.

According to several reports, the players mood changed at Monday’s training session and Martino returned to his 4-3-3 formation with Henry Martín and Rogelio Funes Mori sharing the No. 9 spot. The front trio was completed by Alexis Vega and Henry Martín.
