Riots broke out in Belgium after World Cup loss to Morocco
Morocco beat Belgium in a 2-0 upset in the World Cup on Sunday and riots in several Belgian and Dutch cities have since broken out.
Throughout several cities in Belgium and Holland on Sunday, serious riots broke out following Morocco’s 2-0 World Cup upset to Belgium.
Several rioters flipped cars, lit them and electric scooters on fire, and hit cars with bricks. In Brussels, one person suffered injuries to the face and police had to seal off many parts of the center, deploy water cannons, and fire tear gas to get the crowds to disperse.
There were disturbances reported in the city of Antwerp and throughout neighbouring cities in the Netherlands, including in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and The Hague. Police had to break up a group of around 500 soccer fans who were throwing fireworks and glass at them.
“Those are not fans, those are rioters,” said Brussels mayor Philippe Close. “Moroccan fans are there to celebrate.”
