Update:

The 2024 European Championships got going on Friday with a dominant 5-1 win for hosts Germany. That has been followed by wins for other top seeds including Spain, England, and on Monday evening, France. In what was an entertaining encounter, one that Austria certainly played their part in, the decisive goal came from a well-worked Kylian Mbappé cross which was turned into his own goal by Maximilian Wöber. But that wasn’t the only headline that the new Real Madrid man would be creating.

Mbappé breaks nose and asks for mask suggestions

As the game edged towards its end, the 25-year old went for a header in the Austrian penalty area. As he fell to the ground it quickly became apparent that that was the end of his day’s play. As it turned out, he had broken his nose and it was confirmed that he would likely need to wear a protective mask in upcoming games.

Later that evening, Mbappé himself took to social media with a light-hearted question for fans: ‘Any ideas for masks?’

It will come as no surprise that the response was immediate and varied, although one idea in particular gathered early steam, that of the Ninja Turtles.

This suggestion may not be obvious to those less familiar with Mbappé nickname, which is Donatello, one of the aforementioned shelled heroes.

Will Mbappé play for France against the Netherlands?

Although few people like to see others get injured, there’s little doubt that opposition players and fans wouldn’t mind finding out the news that (arguably) the best player on the planet will be sitting out the match against them. For those in the Netherlands camp, whom France play on Friday in their second group game, they will be just as interested in the decision made on Mbappé. What we currently know is that no operation will be required at the moment, but whether he will feature in the game will be a later call.
