FIFA have now announced the dates for the opening games on each of the continents with Saturday-Sunday 8-9 June 2030 set to feature a centenary celebration ceremony and first matches of Uruguay in Montevideo and both Argentina and Paraguay starting their campaign at home.

Later the following week on Thursday-Friday 13-14 June 2030 the official opening ceremony and opening game of the 2030 World Cup will be held in one of the other main three main host nations, Spain, Portugal or Morocco.

FIFA have also announced that the final will be played on 21 July with the venue for the deciding game already proving to be a thorny issue between the three main host nations with Morocco pushing Casablanca as the city where the showpiece game should be played.

Rabat meeting imminent

Heads of the Spanish, Portuguese and Mornoccan FA’s Pedro Rocha, Fernando Gomes and Fouzi Lekjaa are to meet in Rabat on 18 October and the meeting will serve further the candidacy dossier that must be presented to FIFA in July 2024. This meeting will also serve to continue outlining the total number of venues in which the will play the World Cup and how many will correspond to each organizing country, but also to clarify where the final and the opening match will be played. The staging of the final already seems to be a thorny issue with Moroccan FA president Fouzi Lekjaa already pushing for Casablanca.

The forthcoming meeting will be the second time that the three presidents will meet after the inaugural session in Madrid last month which served to open the round of tripartite meetings. The objective for the three federations is to present a joint candidacy next July with a project that fully satisfies FIFA.
