Flamengo pull trigger on Filipe Luís despite 8-0 rout
The club parts ways with one of its most decorated coaches just months after a near-miss on the global stage.

Filipe Luís is no longer head coach of Flamengo. One of the most successful managers in the club’s history has left his post despite an 8-0 thrashing of Madureira in the Taça Guanabara. The club confirmed the decision in a statement released to the media after the game: “Clube de Regatas do Flamengo informs that, as of this Tuesday (3), Filipe Luís will no longer remain in charge of the professional team. Alongside him, Ivan Palanco (assistant coach) and Diogo Linhares (fitness coach) will also leave the club.”
The move follows a run of poor results – most notably the Recopa defeat to Lanús – despite his status as one of the most decorated coaches in Flamengo’s history. He won the Brasileirão and the Copa Libertadores, and came within touching distance of lifting the Intercontinental Cup, losing the final to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties just three months ago in Qatar.
After that defeat, it was announced that he would remain in charge despite interest from several European sides. Now Flamengo has opted to part ways with him. In any case, an attractive option for the European elite is back on the market, even if his spell at the Mengão ended on a sour note.
