Fluminense: Brazil legend striving for greatness
Rio de Janiero is its home and 1902 was its date of founding. Since then Fluminense has been an integral factor in the growth of football in Brazil. Its Laranjeiras Stadium, which was inaugurated in 1919, remains part of the country’s historic rise to the most successful nation on the planet. It was, after all, the venue where the Canarinhos played their first ever match, scored their first ever goal and lifted their first ever trophy.
What titles has Fluminense won?
The Rio club has won five significant titles over its famous history. There have been three wins of the Série A championship (1983/84, 2009/10 and 2011/12), the Copa do Brasil in 2006/07 and the Teresa Herrera Trophy in 1977/78.
How many Copa Libertadores finals has Fluminense played in?
Ever since the first competition in 1960, Fluminense has made it to the final of the Copa Libertadores on just two occasions.
In 2008 the team lost to LDU Quito on penalties after an incredible 5-5 aggregate score over two legs (2-4 / 3-1). On Saturday everyone associated with the club will be aiming to make history and lift their first regional crown.
