Forget Vela and Chicharito, Chucky Lozano has plans to set new highs

Hirving Lozano shone as one of the franchise players for MLS’s newest club. San Diego FC pulled off a surprise victory in their debut match against LA Galaxy, and the Mexican winger took center stage in the club’s historic first outing.

‘Chucky’ Lozano provided the assist for the franchise’s first-ever goal, scored by Anders Dreyer, setting the tone as he now looks to make an even bigger splash than some of his compatriots — Carlos Vela and Javier Hernández — in their early MLS days.

Vela, who plays on the right wing, started his LAFC career with an assist in his first game. In his second appearance, he added a goal and another assist, and by his third match with the Black & Gold, he had already scored a brace.

Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández, on the other hand, struggled to make an immediate impact. He failed to find the net in his first two appearances and didn’t score his first goal until Week 15. That means Lozano has already outperformed him in terms of debut impact with the Californian club.

Lozano and San Diego FC eye more records

After defeating defending MLS champions LA Galaxy by two goals in their inaugural match, San Diego FC secured a record right out of the gate — they became the first expansion franchise in MLS history to win their debut match against the reigning league champions.

Lozano and San Diego FC will make their home debut this weekend when they host St. Louis City SC at Snapdragon Stadium. The Mexican left winger will be expected to be the team’s primary offensive threat, tasked with creating chances, scoring goals, and providing assists as he sets his sights on surpassing Carlos Vela’s iconic MLS start.
