France can become the first team to qualify for the World Cup 2022 knockout stages when they take on Denmark in Group D on Saturday (11am ET).

The world champions began their title defence with a 4-1 win over Australia on Tuesday, Olivier Giroud bagging a brace as Didier Deschamps’ men recovered from conceding an early Craig Goodwin goal at Al Janoub Stadium.

Denmark, meanwhile, were held to a 0-0 draw by Tunisia.

While the Danes can neither qualify nor be eliminated in Saturday’s game at Stadium 974, France head into the clash knowing that a win will guarantee them a knockout-stage berth.

After drawing level with Thierry Henry’s record haul of 51 France goals in the thrashing of Australia, Giroud will become his country’s highest ever scorer if he finds the net against Denmark.

France vs Denmark: prediction

Denmark have had the upper hand in the teams’ recent meetings, beating France home and away in the Nations League this year. The Scandinavians also held the eventual tournament winners to a goalless draw in the World Cup group stage four years ago.

However, Kasper Hjulmand’s side didn’t impress in their stalemate with Tunisia, and France’s walloping of Australia suggests they’re starting to put their poor summer and autumn form behind them.

A win for France would be their sixth in a row at World Cups - a record for Les Bleus.

Prediction: France 3-1 Denmark
