Hirving Lozano ended his four-year spell with Napoli by winning the club’s first Serie A title since the days of Diego Maradona.

The Mexican forward played more than 150 games for the Italian side across four seasons, before returning to former team PSV Eindhoven in the summer. But despite having now left Italy Lozano appears to have made a good impression.

One of Italy’s most celebrated players, Francesco Totti, paid tribute to Lozano in a recent interview with Fox Sports. Rome-born Totti spent the entirety of his 24-year professional career with the club and won the World Cup with his country in 2006.

“I’ve been very, very impressed with Lozano. He is a player who makes the difference,” Totti said. “He is an important player, a top player who was fortunate to be a protagonist as Napoli became champions. I hope to see more Lozanos in Italy.”

“They are important players, players who have come to have this experience in Italian football,” he explained.

Totti wants to see more Mexicans in Italy

Few players have as much experience in Italian football as Totti, who made a record 786 appearances for Roma during the course of his illustrious career. Totti told Fox Sports that he believes more Mexican players should move to Serie A.

“Mexican soccer is little by little exploding, it is growing and there are players of very high calibre,” Totti said. “I hope one day to see more Mexican players in Italian football.”

In the past some Mexican players have been reluctant to leave Liga MX and tests their abilities in the top European leagues. But in recent years that has shifted and more Mexican stars are moving abroad.

In 2019 midfielder Edson Álvarez signed for Dutch giants Ajax and recently secured a move to West Ham United of the Premier League. Santiago Giménez has starred for Feyenoord this season with 12 goals in eight Eredivisie appearances and has been linked with a move to Real Madrid.
