From Liga MX success to European move: this league winner may be on his way to England
After winning silverware with Toluca and the Mexican national team, this midfielder could be on his way to the English second tier.
On Friday, reports emerged regarding the future of Marcel Ruiz, the 24-year-old attacking midfielder for Toluca. According to journalist César Luis Merlo, the club’s front office is in advanced negotiations with English team Ipswich Town over a potential transfer that would see Ruiz make the leap to European football.
How much would Ruiz cost Ipswich?
Talks are reportedly progressing well, with Toluca - reigning champions of the Liga MX - demanding a fee of at least $10 million for the Mérida-born playmaker.
Ipswich, recently relegated from the Premier League, would bring Ruiz into the EFL Championship with the clear objective of earning promotion back to what many consider the world’s top league.
Ruiz, a product of Querétaro’s youth system, joined Toluca in mid-2022 and has since enjoyed the most productive stretch of his career. In 124 appearances, he has tallied 14 goals and 16 assists, while also playing a key role in Toluca’s Clausura 2025 title run.
A Gold Cup winner with Mexico
His standout performances have also caught the attention of the Mexican national team. Though he’s only earned eight senior caps so far, Ruiz was a starter in five of Mexico’s six games during their recent Gold Cup-winning campaign, contributing an assist along the way.
With his form peaking and interest from Europe growing, this could be the perfect moment for Ruiz to embrace a new challenge and test himself on a bigger stage.
