German-born Cameroonian striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was left without a club over the summer after not renewing his contract with Bayern Munich. However, the 35-year-old appears to have found a new opportunity in American soccer.

According to Sky Sports Deutschland reporter Florian Plettenberg, the player has reached an agreement with the New York Red Bulls to spend next season in MLS.

Plettenberg and Tom Bogert assure that everything is ready for the arrival of the former Bavarian player and the agreements between Choupo-Moting and the Red Bulls are all done pending official confirmation.

The Cameroonian has already undergone medical tests and the contracts with the New York club are already reportedly signed. It is presumed that the contract would be for at least two years starting in January 2025.

A new star in the MLS

The striker has enjoyed a lengthy career in European football, with spells in England (with Stoke City) and in France with Paris Saint-Germain. During his time in the Bundesliga he played for five clubs in the top flight: Nürnberg, Hamburg, Mainz, Schalke O4 and Bayern Munich.

Choupo-Moting won titles with both Bayern and PSG. With the German team he won five: three Bundesliga titles, a Club World Cup and a German Super Cup; while with PSG he won a League Cup, a French Super Cup, a French Cup and two Ligue 1 titles.

It was with Bayern where he really made his mark in terms of games and goals: 122 appearances, 38 goals and 13 assists. And at international level with Cameroon, he has 73 caps and 20 goals and starred in three World Cups between 2010 and 2018.

He was also part of the Cameroon side that finished third in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, although curiously, he spent his entire junior career with Germany’s youth categories before finally deciding to represent Cameroon.

Choupo-Moting will join the NY Red Bulls, who face Orlando City in the Eastern Conference final on Saturday with the hope of advancing to this year’s MLS Cup final.
