Today's venue

We are here from Houston, Texas where the Portugal and Uzbekistan fans have made themselves right at home. This is usually the home of the Houston Texans of the NFL, and don’t be surprised to see some of the Texans in attendance tonight. The venues have been a part of the story all tournament and this stadium seems to have struck a nerve with the foreign fans. Aside from the aesthetic beauty it as also quite functional. It’s inside, which keeps fans and players form the Texas summer sun and shuts down any possibility of a weather delay, which we have in Philly for two hours last night.

Why is Bernardo Silva not playing in Portugal’s World Cup game vs Uzbekistan?

Silva out?

A lot of people are asking why Bernado Silva isn't playing in this massive match up in the group stages. It seems like he is the one that has been singled out after the last game against Congo. Our Roddy Cons has your answer.

If Roberto Martinez gets the XI wrong again today, then fingers are going to start pointing at him. He has to go with this best squad available to avoid disaster.

FIFA

FIFA Rankings

If the atmosphere around the training ground, and all the rumors swirling around the squad weren’t enough to paint a troubling picture of this Portugal side, than the FIFA Rankings might be. This squad came into the tournament ranked in the top five. After their draw to Congo, they are now ranked ninth in the world. Uzbekistan are currently ranked 54th, but that shouldn’t phase them. Congo was ranking right around there last week and still gave Portugal all they could handle. Meanwhile, Colombia sits right behind Portugal in 12th place after their 3-1 win over Uzbekistan.

No pressure on Uzbekistan

All the pressure is on Portugal today. They are the team that is expected to go far. They are the ones who have Champions League winners, and Premier League winners and world class stars. They underperformed in the first match, they can't afford to do so again today.

Joao Neves look

We never know exactly what is going on in the dressing room or within the squad. There will always be speculation, especially if things aren't going perfectly. When that is the case, everything seems to be amplified. The other day cameras caught a bit of Portugal’s training session in preps for today, and Cristiano Ronaldo was seen having a bit of fun. Cameras spotted Joao Neves in the background, peeping on the 40 year old with an unamused face from afar. Now, this is nothing. But with things as they are, you can see how quickly things can get blown out of proportion.

Fans know importance of this match

If you are Portugal, you don't want to leave the fate of your World Cup future for the last day of the group stage. It was be much more stress free to take care of business tonight and not have to worry about beating Colombia in a few days time. That's why the fans are out in full voice understanding the importance of this match.

How odds have dropped

Portugal came into this tournament as one of the favorites to win the World Cup. After a sluggish start to their WC campaign, we have seen their odds to win the whole thing drop. Before we kicked off the tournament, they were had (+700) odds. Now they are (+1300) which actually might just sweeten the deal a little bit. They still have the same side. They still have the same talent. They just struggled a bit out of the gate. If you still believe in this side, taking them now may be even more tempting than before.

Uzbekistan XI

The underdogs come into this match hoping to land a massive upset on Portugal, and the way Fabio Cannavaro's men came out and played against Colombia will give them hope in this match today.

Portugal XI

Have a look at Roberto Martinez's XI and we see that there is a a couple of changes in respect to the XI that came out against Congo. Rube Diaz in in the back for Araujo while Joao Felix is in for Bernardo Silva. He'll be pairing up with Neto an Ronaldo.

Ronaldo's message to team and fans

The time between matches can get quite long, especially when you don’t perform well and have to listen to all the critics waiting to take their shot at a team that was one of the favorites of the tournament. Ronaldo has been here, and he has seen everything before. He’s not phased by a bump in the road but he does have a message for his teammates ahead of a massive match today from Houston

Ronaldo conundrum?

Does Portugal have a problem? The question coming into this tournament didn't revolve around the youth of some of the stars on the side. It didn’t surround the experience of their manager. The question revolved around the best player to ever put on a Portugal shirt. Cristiano Ronaldo has carried this side for so long, but at 40 years old, it’s tough to have him as the center piece of the puzzle. There is a question of what role Ronaldo should play for the good of the team, and the good of his own personal World Cup track record. It’s not an enviable situation for manager Roberto Martinez who has to juggle the desire of his star and the desire of a nation.

Star watch: Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is in their World Cup debut which means for most of us, this is our first look at the country on the international soccer stage. There aren't a lot of names on this squad that are going to ring a bell, but their most recognizable name plays at one of the most recognizable clubs in the world. Abdukodir Khusanov is just 22 years old but is already a staple at Manchester City hav ing played there for the last season and a half. He is rough and rugged, and was one of Pep Guardiola’s most reliable defenders this season.

Star watch: Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo has been the star of the last couple of decades in Portugal, but the time has come to pass the torch. Joao Neves might be the next generational star to come out of the country. He has already won back to back Champions Leagues with PSG, and now he has his sights set on the World Cup. He is just 21 years old and already considered one of the best midfielders in the world. He scored his first World Cup goal in the match against Congo after registering a career high five in the French League and 2 in the Champions League.

Group K Standings

Taking a look at the Group J standings, it's Colombia at the top of the table following their 3-1 win over Uzbekistan. Congo is level with Portugal after their draw on the opening matchday and  have a big game against Colombia later tonight. This group most likely won’t be settled until the final matchday when Colombia and Portugal play each other for what we could only imagine would be the top spot in the group.

Last game: Uzbekistan

In their first World Cup match in the countries history, Uzbekistan hung tight with one of the top teams in South America. They allowed a Daniel Munoz goal in the 45th minute, but Abossbek Fayzullaev scored the equalizer and first World Cup goal in the country's history off a headed rebound in the 60th minute. Luis Diaz gave the Colombians the lead back five minutes later, and Jaminton Campaz capped the game off with a 99th minute goal.

Portugal XI against Congo

This team is packed with attacking talent. Their midfield is maybe the best in the entire world. Their defense is solid, and shouldn't be put to work too much especially against the likes of Congo and Uzbekistan, but something, or many things, weren’t clicking against Congo last week. Coach Martinez went with Cancelo, Araujo, Veiga and Mendes in the back with Fernandes, Neves, Vitinha in the middle and Neto, Ronaldo and Silva up top.

Last game: Portugal

Portugal took on a D.R. Congo side that was a heavy underdog, looking to make a statement in their kick off to the World Cup. Instead they walked out of their opening match humbled by a Congo side that did not look intimidated by one of the top ranked teams in the world. Joao Neves scored a goal in the 6th minute which should have made life a little easier for the Portuguese side, but instead they went into the halftime break level at 1-1 after conceding a Youane Wissa goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Portugal struggled to create much in a flat second half and they settled for a share of the spoils in what was labeled a disaster back home.

We are live from H-Town

Hello everyone and welcome to Houston, where Portugal might have a problem if they can't sort things out soon. They came into this tournament as many people’s favorite, but after a disappointing debut to the tournament their chances have been tossed into serious doubt. Uzbekistan is looking to shock the world in their first World Cup ever, but they know they have their work cut out for them after an opening match loss to Colombia. Both teams want the three points today, but Portugal knows if they don’t walk out of Houston with a win disaster might be awaiting them before the knockout rounds even begin.
