Barcelona’s financial manoeuvres during the current transfer window have given some of us new economic terms to read up on, and prompted others to question the financial chicanery. The latest to join the latter group is former Manchester United and England star Gary Neville, who has openly attacked Joan Laporta’s transfer strategy.

Shortly after Barcelona announced a new agreement with Sixth Street for 15% of its audiovisual rights, Neville responded to the club’s tweet with a comment about the Super League. “Why are FC Barcelona still pursuing the Super League? This is why!” he wrote.

Neville went on to question Barcelona’s financial problems and the way the club is auctioning off its assets - in his eyes, a very risky move. “A desperate club £1.2bn in debt selling future revenue streams to spend on players today in the “Hope” it pays off! Rolling the dice stuff this with a giant of a club”.
