WORLD CUP 2022

Germany face humiliation for second consecutive World Cup

Germany will play Spain tomorrow and a loss would see them with an early exit from the World Cup for the second time in a row.

Germany is included in the list of World Cup upsets that have happened so far in the group stage. After their loss to Japan in Group E, they take on Spain, who had quite a different start to the tournament. Spain won their opener against Costa Rica 7-0. This puts Germany in quite the pickle. The pressure is on as they face Spain on Sunday in their second World Cup group stage match.

Spain confident after huge victory over Costa Rica

Spain’s defeat of Costa Rica was their biggest-ever World Cup victory. Six different players scored in the seven goals Spain recorded in that game. 18-year-old Gavi was one of them and became the third-youngest goalscorer in World Cup history.

Spain’s young starters

Sometimes it’s surprising to see him doing what he’s doing at just 18 years old,” said Spanish teammate Marco Asensio. “I see him training every day and he has great ability and great self-confidence.”

Spain have only won their opening two games on three different occasions, but they are hoping that will change when they take on Germany.

Germany hoping for a different World Cup fate

After an embarrassing group stage exit from the World Cup in Russia in 2018, Germany is hoping for a change of fate in this year’s tournament. History is not on their side against Spain though, as Germany have won just one of their last seven games against them. Their most recent meeting saw the Germans lose 6-0 in the Euro ‘88.

“I don’t think it matters. It was two years ago,” said German player Julian Brandt. “I think we are in a different situation now. We have improved in many, many areas.”

If Japan wins against Costa Rica in their earlier Sunday game, Germany will have to beat Spain in order to avoid a second consecutive group-stage elimination.

“We are now in this sh**y situation,” said Brandt. “But in the end, Sunday is a chance to turn around this whole mood here again.”
